Why Neon Invested In Facets

Imagine a theatre where an actor on top of acting has to also set up everything on the stage from lighting to props to food to costumes, would that be the best use of the actor’s time and talent? Especially when all of this could be automated.

Something similar is happening in the world of cloud computing and software development. Over the years the way software is developed has changed dramatically. Companies now release updates and new features much more frequently than in the past. Instead of big releases once or twice a year, many companies update their software daily or even multiple times a day.

And to implement this, tech companies came up with a new philosophy of ‘You Build It, You Run It’. Previously there used to be siloed teams where one team used to work on development and the other team handled the operations(deployment, security, infrastructure). This siloed approach led to inefficiencies and slow development cycles.

The aim of this new approach was to shorten the development lifecycle. And it did, until it didn’t.

The philosophy of ‘You Build It, You Run It’, works perfectly in a perfect world. But in reality the practice of DevOps is broken. And was confirmed when Gartner reported that, “Through 2022, 75% of DevOps initiatives will fail to meet expectations.” It’s because the world of software has grown tremendously and so has the demands on the systems and on people.

From on-prem to cloud, from waterfall to agile, from shipping once a month to multiple times a day, from one cloud provider to multiple cloud providers the complexity has only increased. Small DevOps teams have to manage complex, interdependent systems. Plus 32 different categories of DevOps tool chains don’t make things easy.

This often results in huge cloud bills, long development cycles and overworked developers. Cloud provided the promised flexibility but it added the unpromised complexity.

Amongst the three of them Pravanjan, Anshul and Rohit have more than four decades of experience in building and scaling large scale systems. Pravanjan was the CTO at Capillary technologies and saw the inefficiencies of the system first hand. To scratch their own itch, they built a product and saw marked improvement in developer productivity which resulted in major cost savings and faster development cycles.

And while talking to other companies they learned that almost everyone is dealing with this problem. And they all wanted to solve it. But they didn’t have the resources in terms of talent, time and effort to build this.

This insight led to the launch of Facets.cloud. With Facets DevOps teams don’t need to spend time on problems which should be automated. They don’t need to spend time on answering questions like How do I launch a QA environment quickly?, How do I roll back a release?, How can I save time on debugging?, How do I provision?

With the help of Facets intuitive no-code platform DevOps team can automate all of their infrastructure needs and spend time on strategic initiatives and experiments rather than boring repetitive tasks.

This not only helps businesses in delivering better value to their customers but also helps them retain talent. As talented people don’t want to do boring tasks. They don’t want to wait. They don’t want bureaucracy. They want to automate the repetitive. They want to build and ship. They want to solve hard problems.

Facets self service infrastructure management enables development teams to do just that. It helps them set up, configure, and maintain all infrastructure components easily and efficiently. They don’t need to write complex IaC(Infrastructure as Code) all the time. Facets does that for them with just a few clicks.

Instead of needing dedicated IT teams to handle every aspect of the infrastructure, small engineering teams can manage many of these elements themselves through Facets. This ability to self serve the infrastructure needs reduces bottle necks, gives teams more control and speeds up the development processes.

With cloud complexity only going to increase with time, Facets provides a solution to a major problem faced by engineering teams at thousands of companies. Tech leaders at companies like Treebo Hotels, Mobile Premier League, Purplle, Capillary Technology swear by Facets on how it has helped them become more agile and focussed on their core application while at the same time reducing infrastructure costs and minimising human error.

Self-service environment management is gaining traction, and for good reason. And with Facets.cloud being mentioned in the Gartner Hype cycle for Platform Engineering 2024, report, they are well-positioned to capitalise on this opportunity, offering a mature solution in a market that’s primed for expansion.

At Neon we are proud to back Facets mission to revolutionise the way software is developed and deployed, enabling teams to do more with less and ultimately drive greater value for their customers.
